Behind the Cover: Capturing BlackTron’s Iconic Return

Writer: Phil WrightonPhil Wrighton

Creating the latest cover image for Blocks magazine was an exciting challenge, as I sought to bring the dynamic essence of the BlackTron spacecraft to life. The spacecraft’s awkward shape, with its sprawling wings and sharp angles, required careful planning to achieve the visual impact I had in mind

To capture the shot, I used a fisheye lens, which allowed me to emphasise the scale and unique geometry of the spacecraft while adding a sense of drama to the image. Lighting was equally critical to highlight the intricate details of the build. I employed three studio flash lights, strategically positioned to create striking contrasts and illuminate the translucent yellow cockpit and key elements of the model.

Once the photograph was captured, the creative process shifted to digital editing. Using Affinity Photo, I crafted a vivid space backdrop with custom brushes, layering cosmic textures, lens flares, and glowing grids to evoke a futuristic setting. The graphics, including the bold BlackTron logo and typographic elements, were designed in Affinity Designer. These tools worked seamlessly together, enabling me to blend the spacecraft into the backdrop while keeping its sharp lines and bold colors as the focal point.

Although the spacecraft’s design presented unique challenges, the combination of careful planning, creative tools, and a clear vision resulted in a cover image that perfectly captures the energy of BlackTron. It’s always rewarding to see the concept come to life, and I hope readers are as excited about this issue as I am.
